The epic times of Rome were so great that it's pretty much guaranteed we'll be seeing games based on it for several years and decades and centuries to come. But before we start looking ridiculously far into the future we should check out Capcom's.
Set right after the assassination of Julius Caesar this upcoming game follows the paths of two men whose fate rests upon what happens next in a city looking for revenge. There are two playable characters in: Agrippa and Octavianus. These two guys are night and day in terms of personality with Agrippa as the dark-haired badass and Octavianus as the fair-haired stealthy type.
Similarly, each of these historic figures has his own distinct type of gameplay. Agrippa goes into battle yelling and screaming and proceeds to slice everyone into quivering little bits as blood sprays every surface. Octavianus takes the more delicate approach and uses more finesse to stay safe in the several buildings in Rome.
For our first of two features we'll focus on Octavianus' sneaking skills. The key thing to remember about Octavianus is the one-hit kill. This is not some specialty of his in the arts of the assassin, but is rather an indication of his defensive abilities. The guards in Rome are burly as all get out and just one smash of their shield or their sword takes poor Octavianus down.
Since putting up a fight is completely out of the option the key thing is to stay hidden and, if that doesn't work, run for cover if he's discovered. Octavianus has a couple different ways to sneak around the hallways. One of these is to crouch along which lets him stay quiet and hidden behind some objects. The other sneaking is done while standing and keeps Octavianus facing in the same direction the entire time.
This is useful for safely negotiating rooms where it's key to watching in one direction the entire time, but really the crouching function is the meat and potatoes of the sneaking here. It's not limited to one direction and has been the biggest help in the quests so far.
Since Octavianus can't go head to head in any battle, all of his attacks are done by sneaking behind someone to knock them out or strangle them. Vases can be used to knock someone out with a big spray of water or a rope can be used to strangle someone and finish them off more permanently. Once the body hits the floor Octavianus can then search the body for some cash or a key and even take the clothes in order to pass by others unnoticed.
If Octavianus gets a costume from a fallen opponent, he then has to play the part to avoid any further suspicion. This means no running, no sneaking, and certainly no walking around with a bloody rope hanging from his hands.
If anything goes wrong and people get suspicious, then it's another run for cover until the search goes away. While sneaking around, Octavianus needs to gather information along the way. This includes finding separate documents scattered about as well as listening in on conversations.
It's the age old technique of peeking through a keyhole that helps move the story along in this regard. Octavianus can peek through and even look around the room as he listens in on some crucial plot points in the game.
When sneaking and listening aren't enough, Octavianus also has a little bit of acrobatics to help him get around. This means that he can clamber around on boxes, on top of shelves, and even the stone beams of the ceiling. It's not a complicated system like the tomb Raider games, but really a user-friendly method of getting along.
When a climbable object is next to Octavianus there will be a circle icon next to it. By following the clues, Octavianus can clamber safely along. Purists will scream at the idea of the paths being laid open like this, but it helps to move the story along so that players don't get stuck in a puzzle room. And that's the flavor of the style of play that faces Octavianus, a man with a most unfortunate name. Tomorrow we'll focus on the brutal stylings of Agrippa and the other half of the gameplay. For now be sure to check out the Media Page to see a few examples of Octavianus in action.
